About the Artist
Miguel Angel Guerrero Garro is from a family of artists on both sides. Painters and musicians formed part of his father´s family and writers and architects, his mother´s. Inspired by both parents, he chose the discipline of painting.
The son of Jésus Guerrero Galván and Devaki Garro Navarro, Guerrero Garro was born July 26, 1946 in Mexico City. From an early age he could not help but be attracted to painting under the guidance of his father, who, in the end, was the predominant influence in his formation as an artist.
Guerrero Garro attended San Carlos Academy from 1963 to 1965, his principal instructor in both painting and nude drawing being Antonio Rodríguez Luna. From this teacher he learned the discipline of drawing, a fundamental pillar for any aspiring painter. Guerrero Garro later studied architecture at U.N.A.M (1968-1972) and worked at this profession for a short time in those first years, before dedicating himself full time to his painting. His architectural studies served to enrich his mastery of drawing and his rendering of space.
In 1974, the artist traveled to Ottawa, Canada where he confronted the challenge of painting landscape of snow, discovering it was not white. He produced a large number of works. Later he went on to Spain where his encounters with the works of great masters consolidated his artistic training.
Parallel to his studies and travels, and together with his brothers Pablo and Jesus, and his sisters Devaki and Flora, the Guerreros founded a blown glass workshop in Cuernavaca . In 1971 they went on to open an art and handicrafts workshop, teaching primarily indigenous ceramic techniques, as well as glasswork and backstrap weaving. In 1975 their workshop became a talavera ceramic studio.
In 1981 the artist traveled again to Canada, this time to British Columbia, and was inspired to produce a good number of paintings of the majestic Rockies. While in B.C., he participated in Vancouver´s Expo ´86 producing maquettes of pavilions and exhibits and contributing to the elaboration of actual exhibits. In 1989, now back in Cuernavaca, he directed the Casa Grande Gallery and in 1996 served as director of the computer publication, Studium PC.
Guerrero Garro has been exhibiting in Mexico since 1971 and, outside Mexico, has had exhibitions in Canada and Spain.
Landscapes are his main theme. He is known for capturing light through color. Oil is his medium, though he has experimented with other techniques. |
